Students from around the world have seen Germany as a top European study abroad destination for many years. In fact, the number of students studying abroad in Germany is expected to top 400,000 this year! Year-over-year growth as a study destination proves that Germany is a compelling option for students seeking high-quality programmes, immersion into a vibrant culture, and proximity to many of the world’s brightest minds.

When it comes to popular fields in Germany, STEM studies lead the way. Engineering is the most popular field of study among international students: One report notes that in 2024, .

Students rate their studies highly, as well. In a survey of almost 100,000 undergraduate students which spanned three academic years, more than 70% of students out of a possible five.

Student Affordability and Access

The cost of living and studying is an important factor for many international students. They’ll be pleased to learn that the 鈥攁nd especially rent鈥攊s often more affordable than in other popular study destinations. While cost-of-living calculator results vary, and students’ expenses will change depending on which city they live in, their lifestyle, and their housing, the calculators generally find it’s to live in the US than in Germany.

Different scholarship programs can make studying in Germany more attainable for international students. Some popular options include the , , and .

Plus, non-EU students may now work , recently doubled from only 10 hours per week. This aligns Germany’s work-while-studying guidelines with those in several popular study destinations. However, students should note that many part-time jobs require employees to understand and communicate in German. So, while it may not be necessary to learn German to study in Germany (though it’s wise to learn a few phrases), if students would like to have a part-time job, they may need to know German to find one.

Key Industries in Germany

Germany is a hub for business and innovation. Its mechanical engineering, chemical, electrical, and automotive industries are . Industry-leading companies like Siemens, BMW, Volkswagen, and BASF (the world’s largest chemical company) are all based out of Germany. Mechanical engineering alone employs over 1 million people in Germany.

All German workers are also that set minimum wages, working hours, and occupational safety. Vacation leave and parental leave also have minimum standards that are mandatory nation-wide, though some industries may exceed these minimums. These protections are important for international students to know about if they plan to work during their studies, as standards may not be the same in their home countries.

Travel Opportunities, Near and Far

You can’t study all the time! Part of the fun of being an international student is taking in different cultures and traveling to new places. Because Germany is located in the heart of continental Europe, a wide variety of activities and hundreds of years of history are at your doorstep. If you take a high-speed train, you can be in Paris in under six hours, or Amsterdam in six and a half. Air travel within Europe has become , but many international destinations are still affordable options.

Or, students can travel within Germany to watch or play in football (fu脽ball) matches, visit lively , or explore one of the that stand across the country. Looking for ? Visit nutcracker factories, take a “floating railway,” drift in a salt water pool, or marvel at a museum dedicated to actor David Hasselhoff. With one of the best train systems in Europe, it’s fast and easy to get to different cities, and even smaller villages.

Wendy, the newest member of ApplyBoard鈥檚 United Kingdom Advisory Board, is now well positioned to help 星空影视work to solve our sector鈥檚 greatest challenges. We鈥檙e grateful to have her experience and expertise steering success in the UK.

Wendy has a formidable resume: vice-principal at the University of Dundee, Scottish Higher Education Trade envoy, advisor to Scotland鈥檚 premier growth equity firm, British Council trustee, and former leader of Scotland鈥檚 Labour Party.

The University of Dundee was named Scotland鈥檚 top university at The Herald Higher Education Awards 2023.

鈥淚鈥檓 a doer rather than a sayer by instinct,鈥� explains Wendy. But before her myriad professional experiences, she studied abroad.

Wendy didn鈥檛 have 星空影视to explore institutions and programs 50 years ago. Instead, she learned of a study abroad opportunity in Canada through her father, who himself learned of it through a cousin he sat beside at a wedding.

鈥淪tudying abroad changed the course of my life,鈥� says Wendy.

Building a Brighter Future for UK Students

鈥淟ife is a team sport, and the higher you rise, it鈥檚 not so much about what you do individually,鈥� Wendy Alexander explains. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about who you inspire, and how you build consensus.鈥�

Further, prospective students must now navigate the UK鈥檚 May 2023 dependent policy update, which forbids international students from bringing dependents to the UK unless the student is taking postgraduate courses designated as research programmes (this mainly refers to PhDs).

Wendy Alexander Joins ApplyBoard’s UK Advisory Board

Wendy Alexander is a Professor of International Education; Vice-Principal, International at the University of Dundee; and the Trade and Investment Envoy for Higher Education for the Scottish Government.

She belongs to the Department for Education鈥檚 Education Sector Advisory Group as well as the British Council Board of Trustees, chairs the Global Advisory Board for Times Higher Education Student, and has had an impressive and distinguished career in international education and strategy consultancy.

As a former Member of Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Paisley North, Wendy held several Scottish Government cabinet posts from 1999 through 2011 (including as Minister responsible for Further and Higher Education), and was the Scottish Labour Party Leader from 2007 to 2008.

Wendy is a member of the Investment Advisory Board of Scottish Equity Partners LLP, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a Patron of Social Investment Scotland, and a member of the UK Government’s Education Sector Advisory Group.

The Right Honourable Jo Johnson

The board is led by The Right Honourable Jo Johnson, former Minister of State for Universities, Science & Innovation and Senior Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School, who was appointed Chairman of 星空影视International听in 2020.听

Mr. Johnson鈥檚 extensive knowledge and advocacy within the higher education sector and international studies make him an excellent fit to lead ApplyBoard’s UK Advisory Board, helping to foster the company’s rapid growth and adoption in new markets.

Jo Johnson attended Cabinet as Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation. He is President鈥檚 Professorial Fellow at King鈥檚 College London, a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School, a Fellow of Birkbeck College, University of London, and a Member of the Council of the Dyson Institute for Engineering and Technology.

Prior to his time in Cabinet, Mr. Johnson spent 13 years at the Financial Times, where he was Associate Editor and won a number of awards for his journalism.

Nick Hillman

Nick Hillman has been the Director of the Higher Education Policy Institute, the UK鈥檚 only think tank specializing in higher education, since 2014. He was previously Special Adviser to The Right Honourable David Willetts MP (now Lord Willetts), during his time as the Minister for Universities and Science.

Previously, he was a history teacher and also spent time working in the City of London. At the 2010 election, he was the runner-up in Cambridge.

Nick has written extensively for a range of think tanks and peer-reviewed academic journals, including the Oxford Review of Education, the Higher Education Review, and Contemporary British History. He also wrote the authoritative account of being a Special Adviser for the Institute of Government.

Mary Curnock Cook

Mary Curnock Cook is an independent education expert serving in a non-executive capacity on a number of Boards. From 2010鈥�2017, Mary was Chief Executive of UCAS. Earlier in her career, she held executive and non-executive positions in the education, hospitality, food, and biotech sectors.

Mary Chairs the governing body of the Dyson Institute and the Access Project, which helps students from disadvantaged backgrounds progress to selective universities. She is a Council member at the Open University, a non-exec Director at the Student Loans Company, the London Interdisciplinary School, and Education Cubed. She is also a Trustee at the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) and the multi-academy trust, United Learning. She currently holds the role of Network Chair of Emerge Education, the leading edtech investor in Europe.

Mary has an MSc from London Business School and was awarded an OBE in 2000 and a CBE in 2020 for services to further and higher education. She is an honorary Fellow of Birkbeck and Goldsmiths and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Gloucestershire.

Sir Steve Smith

Professor Sir Steve Smith is the UK Government International Education Champion, a post he took up after retiring as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter in August 2020. He had held that position since October 2002.

Sir Steve holds a BSc, an MSc, and a PhD in International Relations from the University of Southampton. He served as President of the world academic body in his field (the International Studies Association) from 2003鈥�2004. In 2009, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and in 2012 he was awarded the University of South Florida’s Global Leadership Award. He is the author/editor of 17 books and over 100 journal articles.

Sir Steve was Chair of the UCAS Board from 2013鈥�2019 and President of Universities UK (UUK) from 2009鈥�2011. He was a Board member of the Russell Group (2012鈥�2020); Chair of UUK’s International Policy Network and Chair of UUK’s International Strategic Advisory Board (2015鈥�2020); Member of the UUK Board (2006鈥�2020); and Board member of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (2013鈥�2020). He is currently a Fulbright Commissioner, a Trustee of the Education and Employers Task Force, a Non-Executive Director of Unite Students, Chair of the Liveable Exeter Place Board, and a Patron of Exeter College.

From June 2007 until May 2010, he led for higher education on the Prime Minister鈥檚 National Council of Excellence in Education, which provided advice to Government on strategy and measures to achieve world-class education performance for all children and young people.听

Sir Steve was knighted in the 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to higher education locally and nationally. In 2019, Sir Steve was made a Freeman of the City of Exeter for his extraordinary contribution to Exeter and the local community.
