Northern Futures Scholarship Program
- Scholarship Amount: C$4,000
- Level of Study: Undergraduate (two-year diploma program or four-year degree program)
Six are given out yearly by the company to encourage further education in Northern Canada. Students enrolled in full-time Commerce, Business, Computer Science, Engineering, or Electrical/Telecommunications programs are eligible to apply. However, all eligible students must be living in NorthwesTel’s service areas in northern Alberta, northern British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, or Yukon. If successful, Northern Futures scholarship recipients may apply again for the scholarship the following year, if they still qualify.

Sarah Baker Memorial Fund
- Scholarship Amount: Up to C$5,000
- Level of Study: Postgraduate (graduate students and postdoctoral fellows)
The awards one to two grants per year to graduate students or postdoctoral fellows working on research in the . Applications are usually due yearly in November. It鈥檚 important to note that students at Canadian or American universities may apply to this scholarship. However, all applicants’ research must relate to or be physically located in the Yellowstone-to-Yukon corridor.
Paul Stothart Memorial Scholarships in Mineral Economics
- Scholarship Amount: C$3,500
- Level of Study: Undergraduate or postgraduate (master’s)
One is given out yearly. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s of Economics or a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) program. Students must also have a clear interest in mineral economics. The scholarship deadline is in May. Scholarship criteria includes:
- Academic record
- A referral letter from a professor of economics or mining
- A 500-word essay on the future of Canada’s mining industry聽
Note that students from across Canada may also apply to this scholarship.
Northwest Territories and Nunavut Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Education Foundation Scholarships
- Scholarship Amount: C$2,000
- Level of Study: Undergraduate
The awards two scholarships yearly: the Mel Brown Memorial Scholarship and the Bob Spence Memorial Scholarship. Both scholarships aim to encourage NWT and Nunavut residents to study engineering and geoscience. The scholarship team looks at students’ academics, demonstrated citizenship, and leadership capability.
Per : “A NWT/NU student is defined as a person whose principal residence has been located within the Northwest Territories or Nunavut for a minimum period of twelve (12) months immediately preceding the award of any scholarship, bursary, grant, or financial assistance.” So, while this scholarship is not open to international students in their first year, students in their second year or further along in their program may apply.
